my aunts front gate in malick

Some Saturdays my brother & I would go up the Arouca mountains to the place he called 'The Experiment'. It was a goverment fruit plantation, hid in deep bush and full of caimet, chenet, barbadine, balata, tamarind. It was always deserted those Saturdays. We'd climb the sugar apple trees and look out over the valley to the canefields south of the island with julie mango juice running down our arms.
Mr Clarence aka Gallstones Granfada Buckmouth, my grandfather, the man I stuttered to call Dadadady. As we say in Trini 'he doh eat nice'. He didn't. oh gorm...

I grew up next to the Savannah. It's spirit pulse. I'd spend days here, roaming the expanse,going down to the sanbox tree by the river, wild indian gardens, hunting batchaks and beetles, then burning them in matchbox discoteques...

Every Carnival my mother would pack her basket and take us into the city. This year my brother and I wore tracksuits from England.
